Here is the summary of an interview with Kenrick Drijkoningen, General Partner of Play Ventures, in which he explain the reason why he invested on MetaSoccer, and also his predictions about Crypto market and NFT in general.
Please introduce your fund
Future Fund is the dedicated crypto arm of Play Ventures, specifically focused on investing in opportunities at the intersection of gaming and crypto.
At Future Fund we aim to invest in the strongest teams building key Web 3.0 infrastructure and category-defining games for the emerging play-and-earn industry.
We believe that crypto presents the next big opportunity in reinventing the business model for gaming for the better and that games are at the forefront of enabling mass adoption of this budding technology.
Why did you decide to invest in MetaSoccer?
When we met the team it was clear that they had a deep understanding of the current soccer games market as they had been operating successful soccer manager and fantasy sports products for a number of years already. The existing track record coupled with the team’s understanding of crypto and the ability to execute quickly against their roadmap ultimately solidified our conviction in the team and their vision for the MetaSoccer product.
What are your current predictions for the NFT and crypto markets in 2021–2022?
Needless to say, the current bull run has accelerated investment into the sector by a large amount lately. Whereas decentralized finance protocols saw their upheaval in the summer of 2020, NFTs have had their fair share of investor interest during 2021. With games such as Axie Infinity reaching scale during the second half of 2021, we predict crypto-enabled games to fully capture the opportunity that DeFi and NFTs have laid the groundwork for. Games are by design more intuitive than complex financial products could ever imagine being, while also being efficient at providing a clear use case for NFTs in the form of in-game items.
Similar to previous paradigm shifts in gaming, we predict a fair amount of winners emerging from the companies and products being built today. What makes it particularly exciting is that the best practices and rulebooks are largely unwritten yet on how to make the best games in this space.
How do you think MetaSoccer can disrupt the soccer and gamefi market?
MetaSoccer will bring an entirely new experience to soccer fans worldwide who will be able to immerse themselves in the full managerial experience. In the true meaning of play-and-earn they will be able to have fun but also truly own their teams and players. A carefully designed token model will incentivize players to build and grow their teams for the long term. It will also allow managers to trade, coach and lead their team, win leagues all while earning MSU. They can even become stadium owners which enables them to grow their income through ticketing and renting which is a brand new mechanic.
What are your expectations from MetaSoccer for 2022?
As MetaSoccer rolls out it will hopefully be enjoyed by millions of gamers all across the world and bring in a wave of new non crypto native players. We will also see them working with communities in the crypto gaming space such as guilds to reach an even wider audience.
What are you going to name your MetaSoccer club?
Future F.C., obviously. Forza Futura!
