Women Take the Soccer Metaverse
The Metaverse is by nature a place where physical barriers and social constructs are redefined. In fact, it underpins the need for a more equitable society — especially when it comes to how we identify ourselves in the new Web 3 movement.
MetaSoccer’s vision is to be at the forefront of innovation and inclusivity, so we are pleased to announce that women will be featured in the soccer Metaverse.
Although over the last few years improvements in women’s soccer have been seen, there’s still a long way to go for the most popular sport in the world — for men and women.
Women have played soccer for as long as men; in fact, the first records of women playing a game very similar to soccer date back to 25 CE in China. However, throughout the world, women have been constantly relegated to a domestic position, where playing sports wasn’t perceived as appropriate.
You may be surprised to know that in the 1920s feminine soccer gained a lot of popularity in England, with women’s matches gathering crowds of over 50,000 spectators — which shortly and inexplicably came to an end. The Football Association (FA) imposed a ban on feminine soccer because it was considered “unsuitable for females.” This ban lasted until the 1970s, and only then did women start to be encouraged to play on a professional level, with the creation of national leagues and international competitions.
Development has been slow to include and promote women in sports. Take for example the UEFA Champions League, which has been played by men since 1955, and only in 2001 created a competition for women’s teams! Fewer opportunities, along with lower salaries, sponsorships, and media coverage of matches and competitions have stagnated the growth and potential for women.
MetaSoccer will change this. Our soccer Metaverse will feature female characters that exhibit their own strengths, abilities, capacity to improve and value.
